It’s excellent news for SASSA grants for April 2024, as the long wait for an annual increase finally comes to an end. Following a difficult time of year for some – the Easter long weekend – old-age pension, childcare and disability disbursements from the South African Social Security Agency all increase this week.
SASSA GRANTS FOR APRIL 2024
- The first SASSA grants for April 2024 to enjoy an increase are Older Persons, paid on Wednesday 3 April 2024. A reminder that this grant will pay R2 180 (over 60) and R2 200 (over 75) from this week on.
- Next in line for SASSA grants for April 2024 is Disability on Thursday 4 April 2024. Like the increase to Older Persons grant, this also pays out R2 180 this week onwards.
- Finally, all SASSA Childcare grants will be paid on Friday 5 April 2024. These include R2 180 for Child Dependency, R1 180 for Foster Care and R530 for Child Support.
SOCIAL RELIEF OF DISTRESS (SRD)
SASSA grants for April 2024 also include the Social Relief of Distress or SRD grant, which will be increased for the first time in its history to R370. It is meant for struggling South African who have zero means of income. You can click HERE to apply. The process is done fully online and payments are set for the last week of the month (Wednesday 24 April onwards)
APPLY FOR AN OLD-AGE PENSION IN 2024
If you are an old-age pensioner over the age of 60, this is what you need to know to apply for a SASSA state pension. There are currently 4-million old-age pensioners receiving government grants. Firstly, you or a nominated loved one must visit a SASSA branch or office in person where trained staff can assist you. The application form is not available online to fill in beforehand.
You will need to bring along the following:
- Proof of residence.
- Your bar-coded identity document (ID).
- Proof of your marital status (if applicable).
- Documents proving your income and/or dividends.
- Information regarding your assets, including the value of any property you own.
- Proof of a private pension (if any).
- Up-to-date three months’ bank statements.
- Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) membership book/discharge certificate (if applicable).
- Copy of your spouse’s last will and final liquidation (if dead in the last five years).
- If you are too old/sick to travel to a SASSA office, a family member or friend can apply on your behalf, provided they produce a letter from you/your doctor explaining your ailment.
OLD-AGE ASSET AND MEANS TEST
Crucial to the success of your Older Persons grant application is the asset and means test run by SASSA. In the documents listed above you’ll supply, SASSA must see that a single person does not have an income of more than R86 280 per year or R7 190 per month. If you’re married, your combined household income may not exceed R164 880 per year or R13 740 per month. Similarly, the value of all your assets must not be more than R1 227 600 if single and R2 349 600 if married.
HOW LONG DOES AN APPLICATION TAKE?
SASSA grants for April 2024 can take up to three months to be approved. However, if successful, the benefits you would have accrued in those three months will be paid to you and back-dated from the time of your application.
