KZN Political Killings Task Team takes over investigation into murder of ANC Councillor Sibusiso Khwela
Following the shooting and killing of an African National Congress (ANC) official in KwaZulu-Natal, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the investigation into the murder of ANC Ward 17 Councillor Sibusiso Khwela, from Klaarwater outside Durban, has been taken over by the KZN Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).
According to SAPS National Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, given the Political Killings Task Team’s proven track record in investigating and successfully resolving politically motivated murders, the Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has placed her full faith and confidence in the team’s expertise and capabilities to thoroughly investigate this case.
The PKTT will lead and coordinate the investigation, with detectives already on the ground to ensure that those responsible for this senseless murder are identified, arrested, and brought before the courts.
Earlier that day, MDN News reported that Khwela was shot and killed on Thursday afternoon.
According to KZN SAPS reports, various police units were already combing for clues and evidence at the crime scene in Klaarwater near Mariannhill, outside Durban, where the ward councillor was shot.
Information available at the time suggested that the deceased was in his office with several community members when an unknown man arrived, pretending to need assistance.
The deceased reportedly went outside to help the man, at which point the suspect drew a firearm and shot him several times. He was declared dead at the scene.
The suspect fled the scene on foot. The motive for the killing remains unknown at this stage, and a manhunt for the suspect is underway.
