KZN Budget 2026: MEC Musa Zondi Calls for United Drive to Boost Investment and Create Jobs
KwaZulu-Natal’s economic future depends on decisive collaboration rather than isolated action. That was the central message delivered by Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) MEC Reverend Musa Zondi, who called on government, business leaders, academia and development finance institutions to unite behind a common mission of driving investment, creating jobs and expanding opportunities across the province.
Addressing delegates at the department’s Post Budget Speech Business Breakfast in Umhlanga, Zondi unveiled the priorities contained in the province’s 2026/27 Budget, describing it as more than a financial plan. He said it is a practical roadmap designed to ensure economic growth reaches communities that have long remained on the margins of development.
Speaking under the theme, “Taking the Economy to the People: Delivering Inclusive Growth and Opportunities Across KwaZulu-Natal,” Zondi said the province must focus on bringing meaningful economic opportunities directly to its residents.
Although global markets continue to face uncertainty, he expressed confidence that KwaZulu-Natal has the resilience and determination to turn difficult conditions into opportunities for growth.
“The world economy continues to face significant challenges, but history has shown that periods of uncertainty also present opportunities,” Zondi said. “KwaZulu-Natal has never been a province that waits for opportunity. We create it.”
Building an Economy Ready for the Future
Zondi outlined several strategic priorities that the provincial government believes will strengthen KwaZulu-Natal’s economy over the coming years.
Among the key focus areas are expanding industrial activity through Special Economic Zones, including the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone and Dube TradePort. The province also plans to strengthen transport infrastructure and logistics networks to improve supply chain efficiency and attract further investment.
Support for local manufacturing remains a major priority, alongside efforts to grow township and rural economies that continue to face significant economic challenges.
The provincial government also intends to expand investment in the green economy, identifying sustainability as a major opportunity for future growth and employment.
Government Cannot Do It Alone
While outlining the province’s ambitions, Zondi made it clear that government cannot achieve lasting economic transformation without strong partnerships.
He said each sector has a distinct responsibility in helping KwaZulu-Natal realise its economic potential.
According to Zondi:
- The private sector must continue serving as the primary engine of sustainable job creation.
- Municipalities need to remove unnecessary regulatory barriers and improve the ease of doing business.
- Development finance institutions should provide funding that enables delayed and new investment projects to move forward.
- Universities and academic institutions must ensure graduates possess the skills required by modern industries.
Creating Confidence for Investors
Zondi said the provincial government is actively working to reduce barriers that discourage investment while strengthening support for local businesses and expanding export opportunities.
These measures are intended to create a predictable and stable investment environment capable of attracting both domestic and international investors.
“Our budget sends a clear message. KwaZulu-Natal is open for business,” Zondi said.
He added that government remains committed to working alongside entrepreneurs, supporting investment and ensuring the benefits of economic growth are shared across every district, town and village in the province.
As KwaZulu-Natal positions itself for the next phase of economic development, the success of these ambitions will depend on whether government, industry and communities can transform shared commitments into tangible investment, sustainable businesses and lasting employment opportunities.
