Jurgens says there is no time to dwell as Durban City turn straight to Pirates

Kyle Jurgens says Durban City have already moved on from Burundi and locked in on Orlando Pirates.

The midfielder, who scored in the CAF Confederation Cup trip to Burundi, said the squad had to recover fast and shift focus to Thursday’s Betway Premiership clash with the Buccaneers.

Durban City beat Rukinzo of Burundi 1-0 at home, and 2-0 away to advance to the second preliminary round of the Confederation Cup.

“We’re looking forward to the game. It’s another important fixture for us,” says Jurgens.

“And after the last match we’ve had to quickly shift our focus and prepare ourselves for what’s ahead. We know what we need to do and now it’s about taking that preparation onto the pitch.”

The turnaround has been tight. “It’s been a busy period for us, so recovery has been important.

“We’ve had to make sure we recover properly, get our bodies right and then focus on the next game. There’s not much time to dwell on the previous result because you have to keep moving forward.”

Jurgens believes the group is in a good place after recent results, but he refused to treat Pirates as just another fixture.

“We’ve had some positive results and there’s confidence within the team,” he says. “But we also know that every game is a new challenge. We have to keep that focus and continue working for each other.”

His goal in Burundi mattered. Bu he still put the team first.

“It was a good moment for me to get on the scoresheet, especially in such an important game. But for me, it was always about helping the team and doing whatever I could to contribute. Hopefully I can continue to contribute in the games ahead.”

And that is his standard. “I always want to improve and contribute more to the team,” he adds.

“Whether that’s through goals, assists or the work I do during the game, I want to make sure I’m helping the team in whatever way I can.”

The plan against Pirates is simple: stay on themselves, stay together.

“We have to stay focused on ourselves and make sure we carry out what we’ve been working on. We need to stay disciplined, compete for everything and remain together throughout the game. Those things will be important for us.”

The target is a performance they can stand by — and a result.

“We want to put in a performance that we can be proud of and, ultimately, get the result we’re looking for. We know it won’t be easy, but we’ll go into the game confident, focused and ready to give everything for the team.”
