Media Statement DURBAN – Over 1 500 police officers and civilian staff within the employ of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal assessed their tactical readiness and fitness when they took part in the third annual Provincial Commissioner’s 12.5km Race/Funwalk which was held at Blue Lagoon Beach on the Durban’s Beachfront on Friday, 25 April 2024. The race was conceptualised by the Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in 2022 and this year’s event was by far the best in terms participation and organisation. South African Police Service members, Metro Police officers, Correctional Services officers as well as officers from the Road Traffic Inspectorate raced along the North Beach with a sole purpose of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. With R5000 lying await for the winners, It was a two horse race on the Men’s Race with only a split second separating Constable Thamsanqa Mbanjwa and Provisioning Administration Clerk Themba Dlamini. Constable Mbanjwa from Montclair Police Station clocked 42.26 seconds whereas Eshowe Police Station’s PAC Dlamini was hot on his heels with 42.27 seconds on the clock. Last year’s winner Sergeant Petrus Ndlela from Plessislaer Police Station could only settle for a third position with a time of 42.47 seconds. On the Women’s Race Constable Thabisile Thobeka Phungula from Dundee Police Station reclaimed her 2022 inaugural title which she had lost last year when she emerged second best. This year Constable Phungula made the time of 55.04 seconds to relive her glory days. She shrugged off competition from Constable Fanta Ngema from Empangeni Public Order Policing (POP) who hit the finish line 41 seconds later. Constable Future Jona from Public Order Policing (POP) in Durban crossed the finish line in third position with the time of 57.42 seconds. The Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Makoba reiterated the importance of a healthy lifestyle and fitness for police officers. She said that policing was a difficult job that needs sharp-minded officers and that fitness was a fundamental catalyst to a healthy mind. “We are thankful to the Provincial Commissioner who dedicated a special day to fitness for all members of the South African Police Service in our province. Only physically and mentally fit police officers will be tactically ready to respond to any incident and will execute street survival tactics and techniques with precision. We encourage all of you to exercise in your spare time so that you stay healthy and ready to serve our people”, said Major General Makoba. Build-up races were held across the eleven districts to ensure that officers all over the province are fit and healthy. Ends
