Tributes have poured in for Mbongeni Sikhakhane, a respected KwaZulu-Natal farmer and agricultural leader, who was fatally shot during an apparent armed robbery at his home in Sweetwaters, near Pietermaritzburg.
Sikhakhane, who served as the KwaZulu-Natal chairperson of the African Farmers’ Association of South Africa (AFASA), was widely regarded as a champion of emerging farmers and rural development.

He was reportedly attacked at his residence on Friday evening and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Political leaders, farming organisations, and community members have described his death as a devastating loss to the agricultural sector.
Sikhakhane was praised for his commitment to empowering small-scale farmers, promoting inclusive growth, and mentoring young people pursuing careers in agriculture.
AFASA and other stakeholders condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence and calling on law enforcement to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
His death has also reignited concerns about safety in rural communities, particularly among farmers and agricultural workers.
Sikhakhane is remembered as a dedicated leader whose contribution to farming and community development in KwaZulu-Natal is expected to leave a lasting legacy.
