KwaZakhele Birthday Massacre: Gqeberha High Court Set to Sentence Man Convicted of Eight Murders
A birthday celebration in KwaZakhele that ended in bloodshed and heartbreak is set to reach a major legal milestone as the Gqeberha High Court prepares to sentence Mzwandile Mahambehlala for his role in one of the Eastern Cape’s most devastating mass shootings.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape confirmed that sentencing proceedings against Mahambehlala are underway at the Gqeberha High Court, where the court will determine the punishment for a crime that claimed eight lives and left a community in mourning.
Mahambehlala was convicted on 11 of the 13 charges brought against him, including eight counts of murder, one count of unlawful possession of a firearm, one count of unlawful possession of ammunition and one count of attempted murder.
He was acquitted on two attempted murder charges after witnesses linked to those counts declined to testify.
The accused appeared before Judge Dunywa AJ, with the State leading the prosecution.
Birthday Gathering Turned Into Scene of Horror
The convictions relate to a mass shooting that took place on 29 January 2023 in Maqanda Street, KwaZakhele, Gqeberha.
The evening began as a family gathering to celebrate Vusumzi Sishuba’s birthday. Friends and relatives had gathered to mark the occasion when his brother, Andile Sishuba, arrived from East London at around 17:40.
According to the case presented in court, the celebration was shattered less than 15 minutes later when two armed men approached from the direction of Andile’s home.
When Andile confronted the men and asked why they were there, the situation turned deadly. The attackers allegedly pulled out firearms and opened fire on the group of people gathered at the celebration.
The shooting left eight people dead and three others injured, sending shockwaves through KwaZakhele and surrounding communities.
Special Police Team Investigated Deadly Eastern Cape Shooting
Following the massacre, a specialised investigation team was established to track down those responsible.
The team included members from the Provincial Head Office Serious Violent Crime Investigation Unit and the Gqeberha Serious Violent Crime Investigation Unit.
Mahambehlala was arrested on 2 February 2023 after police received information that led them to a block of flats in Walmer, where he was found hiding.
He has remained in custody since his arrest.
The investigation and subsequent trial have been closely followed by residents seeking justice for the victims and their families.
Court to Deliver Sentence After Conviction
The Gqeberha High Court is expected to deliver the sentencing outcome after considering the evidence presented during the proceedings.
The SAPS Eastern Cape said it would provide a further statement once the court has handed down the sentence.
For the families of those killed in the KwaZakhele birthday massacre, the ruling marks another significant moment in their long search for justice after a celebration that ended with eight lives lost.
