WESTERN CAPE – The vigilance of Knysna Crime Prevention unit(CPU) members resulted in the confiscation of an unlicensed firearm and arrest of three men on the N2 highway at the entrance to Knysna. On Thursday, 03 October 2024 at about 18:00 the CPU in conjunction with Western Cape Provincial Traffic officials conducted a vehicle check point and pulled over a silver Volkswagen Polo with three occupants. The members approached the vehicle when one of the occupants got out and fled. The vigilant members gave chase and his freedom was short-lived when the team caught up with him. A search ensued of the vehicle and the occupants resulted in the confiscation of an unlicensed firearm as well as twenty-three 9mm rounds. All three occupants were taken into custody for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The trio remain in police custody and are expected to make their first appearance in the Knysna Magistrates’ court on Monday, 07 October 2024. The possibility that the suspects could be linked to other serious crimes in the region are being investigated. These arrest and confiscation forms part of ongoing operations to safeguard the public as well as road users. Similar operations will be conducted as part of crime combatting operations for the weekend under “Operation Shanela”. Ends
