Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The SAPS Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola and her management welcomes the 20 years’ prison sentence handed down by the Kimberley Regional Court to 20-year- old Lesley Meintjies following the rape of a nine-year-old girl in Kimberley on Tuesday, 03 December 2019. The Court heard that, on the said day the mother of the victim sent the accused home to switch off the stove as she was already at work. The accused, whilst he was inside the house, went into the victim’s room while she was asleep and raped her. The victim screamed and the accused ran out of the room back to the victim’s mother at work. The victim informed her mother and the incident was reported to the police who subsequently arrested and charged the accused for the alleged rape. Lesley Meintjies was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for rape and his name will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders and was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. In an unrelated case, the same Court sentenced, 19-year-old Layton Tyreeq Jood for rape of a nine-year-old boy at the victim’s friend’s house in Kimberley on Sunday, 06 October 2019. The accused was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for which four years’ were suspended for a period of five years’. Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, praised the Investigating Officer, Detective Sergeant Juanita Lakey for ensuring that crimes against children are dealt with harshly and ensured that both accused are brought to book. She said that these convictions are as a result of strengthened children rights and increased investigative capacity of the police. The police are encouraging the public to rate the police efforts in fighting crime by participating in the “RATE OUR SERVICE” online survey to assist the police in improving services. Ends
