NORTHERN CAPE – The SAPS continues to advocate for the rights of women and children which is evident in the sentences secured by detectives. Management welcomes the 6 year sentence that was handed down to a 30-year-old biological father for assault GBH after he assaulted his year old baby boy. On 28 September 2023 at approximately 23:30, the grandmother had the baby on her back when an altercation broke out between her and the father of the child. He grabbed the baby from her back and threw the child on the ground. When paramedics and police arrived, the baby boy was unconscious and admitted to hospital for medical attention, and the father arrested. The father was sentenced on 29 July 2024 in the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court to 6 years imprisonment, half suspended for 5 years on condition that the accused is not found guilty of Assault GBH during the time of suspension. The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The investigating officer, Detective Constable Shawn Boer of the Kimberley Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, led the investigation that resulted in the conviction and sentence. This is a clear indication that crimes committed against children will not be tolerated, and detectives continue to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. Ends
