Durban is preparing for a powerful celebration of South African culture, food and music as amapiano star Kelvin Momo takes centre stage at the return of the eThekwini Shisanyama Festival, an event expected to bring together thousands of music lovers, food entrepreneurs and communities during Heritage Month.
The festival will take place on Saturday, 26 September 2026, at Berea Rovers in Durban, marking the second edition of an event that aims to celebrate the deep cultural roots of shisanyama while highlighting its growing role in township economies.
Known for his signature soulful amapiano sound, Kelvin Momo will headline the festival as organisers look to create a memorable experience built around authentic South African cuisine, live entertainment and community-driven entrepreneurship.
Beyond the music, the event represents a wider movement that recognises shisanyamas as more than food destinations. These businesses have become important economic hubs, creating employment opportunities, supporting local suppliers and attracting visitors to township areas.
Honouring the Legacy of Jabulani “Mjay” Zama
Festival founder Lunga Mkhize, who owns Metro Gents Shisanyama in Umlazi, said the idea behind the event was inspired by the late Jabulani “Mjay” Zama, the founder of the iconic Eyadini Lounge.
Zama became widely respected for transforming the image of township businesses and proving that local establishments could become nationally recognised destinations.
“Mjay showed us that a shisanyama could become much more than a place to eat,” Mkhize said.
“He built a destination that attracted people from all walks of life while creating opportunities for the community around him. His vision inspired many of us who own shisanyamas today, and this festival is about continuing that legacy.”
Through the festival, Mkhize hopes to give emerging entrepreneurs the same type of exposure that helped shape Durban’s thriving township food scene.
Many local meat vendors featured at the event have built their businesses from humble beginnings, starting with roadside stalls or small trading spaces before establishing permanent operations.
The festival will provide these entrepreneurs with an opportunity to introduce their products to a larger audience while connecting with potential customers and business partners.
A Platform for Township Entrepreneurs
The event arrives as South Africa continues to face significant challenges around youth unemployment and limited economic opportunities.
For many young entrepreneurs, food businesses have become a pathway towards financial independence. Small street-food operations have grown into established businesses, creating income not only for owners but also for employees and suppliers.
“When people support local vendors, they are supporting families, creating jobs, and helping small businesses grow,” Mkhize said.
“We want this festival to become a place where entrepreneurs can make meaningful business connections while showcasing the quality of what they produce.”

Heritage Month Celebration Through Food and Culture
The decision to host the festival during Heritage Month was intentional, with organisers aiming to highlight how food brings South Africans together despite cultural differences.
Mkhize said traditional meals and the shared experience of gathering around a fire remain an important part of South African identity.
“Whether your family gathers around pap and vleis, braaibroodjies, boerewors, lamb, or chakalaka, the braai is something shared across cultures,” he said.
“We wanted to create a space where people from different communities could celebrate that together.”
The festival will combine live performances, traditional cuisine and business showcases, creating a space where entertainment and economic empowerment meet.
