Media Statement UPINGTON – Substance abuse has been identified as one of the main contributors to the constant and uncontrollable crime increase, especially contact crimes and economic crimes. The SAPS is applying pro-active methods to address these challenges through the identification of illegal trading of liquor and closing down of such outlets. The SAPS in Kakamas reacted to information about the illegal brewery of concoction beer on Saturday night, 20 July 2024, which is selling at a relatively low price and anyone can get hold of. They confiscated 243 bottles of concoction beer to the total value of R4860. The liquor was disposed of and a fine was issued to the owner. They continued to close down two illegal outlets where they confiscated liquor amounting to R2400-00 and a 54-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man were arrested for contravention of the Northern Cape Liquor Act.
The SAPS is sending a stern warning against the illegal trading of liquor with specific attention to the increasing number of tuck-shops that are illegally trading in liquor as this is exposing children and grant them easy access to liquor.
