Kaizer Chiefs News: Thabo Cele Left Out of Spain Tour as Exit Speculation Grows

Thabo Cele

Fresh uncertainty surrounds Thabo Cele’s future at Kaizer Chiefs after the midfielder was notably absent from the squad that departed for the club’s pre season training camp in Spain, a decision that has intensified speculation over whether his time at Naturena is drawing to a close.

The Amakhosi squad left South Africa on Thursday to begin preparations for the 2026/27 campaign under assistant coach Fernando Da Cruz. The overseas camp is expected to play a key role in shaping the club’s plans for the new season, making Cele’s omission all the more significant.

Chiefs are scheduled to face a demanding line up of opponents during their stay in Europe. They will take on Scottish heavyweights Rangers FC on 12 July before meeting Saudi Arabian club Al Kholood on 15 July. Their final friendly is against Spanish side Elche CF on 18 July.

For a player who featured prominently for Chiefs last season, missing one of the club’s most important pre season assignments has inevitably raised questions.

Reports suggest the 29 year old midfielder and his representatives are already assessing possible opportunities elsewhere, adding further weight to growing rumours that an exit could be on the cards before the new campaign begins.

Cele only arrived at Kaizer Chiefs in January 2025 after joining on a free transfer following his departure from Russian club Fakel Voronezh. His signing came after a prolonged pursuit by Amakhosi, who had identified him as a key addition to strengthen the midfield.

He quickly repaid that faith.

Cele became an influential figure during the second half of the 2024/25 season, helping Chiefs end a painful decade long wait for silverware by lifting the Nedbank Cup. His composure in midfield and ability to dictate play made him an important part of the team’s resurgence.

However, his momentum was disrupted by injuries last season, restricting his involvement at a time when Chiefs were looking to build consistency.

Despite those setbacks, Cele has made 36 appearances across all competitions since arriving at Naturena, contributing to one of the club’s most significant achievements in recent years.

For now, neither Kaizer Chiefs nor the player has publicly addressed his omission from the Spain tour.

Until there is official confirmation, questions over Cele’s future are likely to dominate the conversation as Amakhosi continue preparations for the new season without one of their recent midfield regulars.
