Kaizer Chiefs Must Challenge for the Betway Premiership Title This Season, Says Reneilwe Letsholonyane
Kaizer Chiefs are heading into the new Betway Premiership season carrying the weight of expectation, and club legend Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsholonyane believes there is no longer any room for excuses.
While newly appointed head coach Fernando Da Cruz has urged supporters to remain patient, insisting his squad is still developing and has not yet reached the level of Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns, Letsholonyane has delivered a far more demanding verdict.
For the former Amakhosi midfielder, this is the season when one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs must once again compete for the league crown.
Chiefs Must Aim Higher
Letsholonyane has stood firmly by the prediction he made before the previous campaign. After backing Chiefs to secure a Top 8 finish last season, he now believes the club must take the next step and become genuine title contenders.
“Last season I said they would finish in the Top 8. This season is when Kaizer Chiefs must compete for the league title. I am not changing my stance. I don’t think they have any excuse not to challenge for the league,” said Letsholonyane.
His comments underline the growing pressure surrounding Amakhosi as supporters continue to wait for a return to domestic dominance after several disappointing seasons.
No Time for a Long Rebuild
Despite Da Cruz’s cautious assessment of his squad’s progress, Letsholonyane believes a club with Kaizer Chiefs’ history and stature cannot afford a lengthy rebuilding project.
According to the former midfielder, the priority should not be overcomplicating the process but getting the best out of the players already available.
“A team like Kaizer Chiefs doesn’t need a coach who takes too much time to understand the players. He must allow them to play to their strengths and keep the group together.”
His remarks reflect a belief shared by many within the club’s fan base, who expect immediate improvement rather than another season of transition.
Unity Could Be Chiefs’ Biggest Weapon
While tactical decisions and player recruitment often dominate pre-season discussions, Letsholonyane believes the most decisive factor could be the spirit inside the dressing room.

“When players are united, they fight for one another and work hard for each other on the field. When that happens, it means the coach has achieved something, and the results will follow.”
