Media Statement GQEBERHA – Kariega and Gqeberha K9 Unit members left no stone unturned in clamping down on vehicle hijackers who were arrested shortly after hijacking a truck and a motor bike in separate incidents on Tuesday, 26 March 2024. It is alleged that on the mentioned date at about 07:15, a truck was hijacked on the R75, when the driver of a truck had stopped to check something at the back of the truck when he was accosted by three unknown men who arrived in a white bakkie. The driver and his passenger were ordered to get out of the truck and were shoved into the bakkie. They were dropped off in Veeplaas where they reported the incident at SAPS Kwadwesi. At about 08:15, Kariega K9 Unit members were busy with patrols along the R75 when they noticed a truck standing on the side of the road in the direction of Despatch. When they stopped to investigate, they noticed a man running away. He was apprehended. A second suspect jumped over a fence and disappeared into dense bushes. A signal jammer was found in the suspect’s backpack. All the stock containing frozen foods and groceries valued at about R125 000 were recovered. The 48-year-old suspect is detained on a charge of vehicle hijacking and possession of suspected stolen property. He is expected to appear in court soon. In another unrelated incident, also on Tuesday 26 March 2024, at approximately 20:30, the complainant was driving a motorcycle (black Hero 100CC) in Springbok Street in Gelvandale when he was hit with a stone. The complainant lost control and fell off his motor cycle. Two suspects, aged 21 and 34, ran towards him and searched him. The complainant ran away and the suspects rode off with the motor cycle. Gqeberha K9 Unit, recovered the motor cycle in 6th Avenue, Algoa Park and arrested two suspects on charges of hijacking. The suspects will appear in court soon. Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Vuyisile Ncata commended the operational members for their swift action. ‘Truck hijackings are a serious concern in the metro, and we are making inroads in clamping down on vehicle hijackings,’ added Maj Gen Ncata.
