Pieterse: Dion is Sundowns’ new Brockie
Reyaad Pieterse has compared Golden Arrows striker Junior Sede Dion to former SuperSport United forward Jeremy Brockie after the Ivorian kept adding to a remarkable record against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Dion has scored more PSL goals against the Brazilians than against any other club — eight in total. Only Siyabonga Nomvethe, with 10, has scored more times against Sundowns in league history.
Speaking on the Sundowns Pitchside Podcast, Pieterse said the threat is real, but he framed it as a collective problem rather than a personal duel.
“I’m sure it does become a personal thing, but I always say like a goalkeeper is as good as his defenders, but it’s a collective effort.
“And of course, if you look at Dion, his movement is very good,” said Pieterse. “He’s again another fearless striker that works tirelessly. And sometimes that hard work gets rewarded.”
He added that persistence, not just quality finishing, is what keeps Dion dangerous.
“And even if it’s a fluke shot, and not to say that he’s been scoring that,” he added. “But I’m saying his persistence and hard work gets him that and gets him on the end of crosses and things like that.
“But I don’t think it’s a concern, a thing that we need to worry about.” The comparison to Brockie came when Pieterse spoke about over-preparing for one man at set pieces.
“I remember there was a time where we used to focus on Jeremy Brockie. Every time, boom, far post is Brockie,” he explained.
“So every time, I feel like it’s another case of that and it comes down to the thing of set pieces that because you emphasize that don’t make sure that he doesn’t get on the end of it.”
In other words: Sundowns know exactly where the danger is. Stopping Dion from arriving there is the next test.
