Khanye takes aim at Kaizer Chiefs chief Junior Motaung
Former Kaizer Chiefs player, Junior Khanye says Kaizer Motaung Jr is not ready to run the club, and he has a list of reasons why.
Khanye has not held back about the club’s current direction, and his verdict on Kaizer Motaung Jr is blunt.
He says he has nothing but respect for Bobby Motaung who used to run the show at Naturena.
“For me Bobby, the one I knew, was good even though everyone has their mistakes,” he said. Khanye remembers a general manager who was hands-on, listened to the senior players, and always had time for a problem.
“When I was there, he was very involved as the general manager. He is human and has his ow personality but when talking to someone, he would give then an honest ear. When I had issues, it was easy to speak to him.”
The real concern, according to Khanye, is whether Kaizer Jr can connect with the people around him. “With Junior, I played with him, and I am not sure he was ready to manage the team.
“You have to be able to interact with the people.” He went further: “Can he listen to someone else’s opinion?”
Khanye believes Chiefs must follow the example of Sundowns and Pirates, who engage with their supporters after every game.
“Chiefs should be like that, the supporters are supposed to have a say,” he explained. “It may not be the final word, but there is some advice they can give to the management. So, if those people are unhappy, there will be a problem.”
Khanye’s solution is clear. Bring in an outsider with a clear mandate and a firm timeframe.
“He can say, here is the job, I am giving you everything and we are giving you three years and we will judge you on your performance. I do not think Junior is ready to do that though.”
Khanye questions several of Junior’s calls. He points to the decision to bring in the current coach, and to the Andile Jali episode, which he says revealed where Junior’s priorities lay.
Khanye claimed that Motaung Junior showed arrogance when Jali became available after his stint overseas.
“When Andile Jali was a free agent, he said he had wanted him before he went overseas. That statement alone told me something about him,” said Khanye.
“Even now as the sports manager, he is making questionable decisions,” added Khanye.
On the release of Thabo Cele and keeping Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Khanye was equally direct.
“I am not saying Cele was ‘wow’ at Chiefs, but he was better than Mthethwa. You can’t release Cele and leave Mthethwa.
“It means he was sacrificing. He needs to humble himself and bring someone to help him with player identification.”
