Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has publicly confirmed his long-standing friendship with Johannesburg businessman and socialite Zesimdumise Zenzile Nxumal.
Speaking during a media briefing at the EFF headquarters in downtown Johannesburg, Malema said Nxumalo has been a close associate and has previously supported the party with transportation.
“Ze Nxumalo is my friend,” Malema stated, adding that Nxumalo is well known in northern Johannesburg circles. He further described Nxumalo as someone deeply connected in elite social spaces, claiming he grew up around the household of billionaire businessman Johan Rupert and maintained close friendships within those circles.
Malema also revealed that his introduction to the late taxi boss Jotham Msibi came through Nxumalo. He explained that he first met Msibi during a strike in Johannesburg and later again at Nxumalo’s office in Sandton.
Addressing allegations linking Nxumalo to the so-called “Big 5 cartel,” Malema dismissed the claims, stating that neither he nor his associates are involved in such activities. He added that he was surprised by allegations involving Nxumalo’s father, saying he had never witnessed any wrongdoing.
Malema’s remarks come amid growing scrutiny over alleged networks of influence involving business figures and political actors in South Africa.
