Jozi FM Celebrates 31 Years Of Broadcasting With Message Of Faith And Purpose
For more than three decades, Jozi FM has remained a familiar voice in Johannesburg communities, surviving a rapidly changing broadcasting landscape and proving that community radio can endure against the odds.
As the station marked the official launch of its 31st birthday celebrations, Jozi FM’s Dr Mpho Mhlongo reflected on the journey from a humble beginning to becoming a respected community broadcaster, crediting the station’s longevity to faith, purpose and what he described as God’s continued grace.
Speaking during an on air celebration ceremony, Mhlongo recalled the uncertainty surrounding Jozi FM’s early years, when many questioned whether a community radio station could survive in an industry largely dominated by major broadcasters, including the SABC and former homeland radio stations.
He said the station’s survival was evidence of a greater purpose beyond broadcasting.
“It is only because of God that we have been given this opportunity. When God has a plan for your life, no one can stand in the way of it. Jozi FM is here because there is work to be done. There is a purpose that still needs to be fulfilled,” said Mhlongo.
The station’s 31 year journey has been shaped by challenges, changing technology and a competitive media environment. However, Mhlongo said Jozi FM’s ability to remain relevant was built on faith, dedication and its commitment to serving listeners.
“When we started, many people doubted us. They said, ‘You can’t do this.’ At the time, broadcasting was dominated by the SABC and stations such as Radio Bop, Radio Transkei and Radio Venda. Yet here we are today, still standing because of God’s grace and His faithfulness,” he said.
Community radio stations have historically played an important role in giving local communities a platform to share stories, discuss challenges and celebrate achievements. For Jozi FM, Mhlongo said the mission remains focused on creating a meaningful connection with listeners while continuing to expand its influence.
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence that the station’s next chapter would bring further growth and greater opportunities to serve communities.
“God has brought us this far because He has a purpose for Jozi FM. He will continue to help us grow, become stronger and reach even greater heights. God’s plans are always good. Our responsibility is to trust Him, accept His will, walk in His purpose and, above all, remain in His presence,” he added.
As Jozi FM celebrates 31 years on air, the milestone represents more than a birthday celebration. It reflects the resilience of community broadcasting and the power of a local voice that has continued to connect with audiences through decades of social and media transformation.
