Jonathan Majors is feeling the sting of disappointment. The actor had recently portrayed Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
However, he recently expressed his heartbreak over Robert Downey Jr. taking over as the main villain in the next Avengers film.
JONATHAN MAJORS, KANG AND DR DOOM
Downey will play Doctor Doom, replacing Majors’ character.
Majors spoke about his feelings. “Yeah, heartbroken. Of course,” he said when asked about the MCU’s new direction, according to Variety.
“I love Kang. Doctor Doom is wicked, though.” The change in casting comes after a tumultuous period for Majors.
In December, Marvel dropped him on the same day that a court found him guilty of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault.
JONATHAN MAJORS AND KANG THE CONQUEROR
Kang, poised to be the next big villain after Thanos, was set to feature prominently in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
However, Marvel has scrapped that film in favour of Avengers: Doomsday, which will star Downey as Doctor Doom.
Majors’ case involved allegations from his then-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari.
She accused him of assaulting her in the backseat of a private car after she took his phone to read a text message from another woman.
JONATHAN MAJORS LEGAL ISSUES
Jabbari claimed Majors forcefully retrieved his phone, injuring her finger, and hit her on the back of her head when she exited the car.
The court found Majors guilty of harassment and assault but acquitted him of intentional assault in the third degree and aggravated harassment in the second degree.
Despite his legal troubles, Majors remains hopeful about a return to the MCU, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“Hell yeah! Hell yeah! I love him. I love Kang,” he enthused.
“If that’s what the fans want, and that’s what Marvel wants then let’s roll. Hell yeah.”
ACTORS WITH TROUBLED PASTS
Interestingly, Downey’s return to Marvel has sparked discussions about the industry’s approach to actors with troubled pasts.
In 1996, authorities arrested Downey for possessing heroin, cocaine, and an unloaded gun, leading to three years of probation, according to the Independent.
He faced numerous legal issues in the years that followed, yet Marvel took a chance on him, casting him as Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man.
It became a massive success and launched the MCU.
THE AVENGERS AND DOCTOR DOOM
“I think it’s fair that people greet Mr. Downey with patience, curiosity, and love,” Jonathan Majors commented.
“He’s being allowed to work his art and be creative at that level. I didn’t really get that.”
Comic-Con announced Downey’s return to the MCU earlier this month.
He is set to star as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday in 2026 and will reprise the role in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
NEXT CHAPTER
This marks a significant shift in the MCU’s villain lineup, moving from Kang to the iconic Doctor Doom.
Jonathan Majors’ admiration for Downey and his portrayal of Doctor Doom is clear, despite his own disappointment.
As Marvel fans gear up for the new phase of the MCU, the legacy of Kang the Conqueror hangs in the balance.
MARVEL AND KANG
Jonathan Majors may be down, but he’s certainly not out.
If Marvel and the fans are willing, he’s ready to don Kang’s mantle once more.
For now, all eyes are on Downey as he prepares to bring Doctor Doom to life and lead the next chapter of the Avengers saga.
