Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – Two additional police murder suspects both aged 27 appeared before the Gqeberha New Law Court on 8 January 2025 facing allegations of police murder and robbery of a state firearm. The accused were arrested by the Gqeberha Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks, in a joint efforts with Mount Road Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) on 6 January 2025. Their co-accused have since appeared before the Gqeberha Nerina House Youth court on 6 January 2025 following their arrest by the Hawks on 4 January 2025. Furthermore, these additional arrests came after police Constable Callan Andrews (29) attached at Gelvandale Police station was brutally murdered whilst on duty on 31 December 2024 by the alleged suspects. During the time of the incident, the officer was at Voisen road Katanga, Gelvandale in Gqeberha, attending to a complaint where an unknown suspects reportedly grabbed his service pistol and fatally wounded him. The police official was rushed to the nearest hospital where he was declared deceased as he succumbed to a bullet wound. Intensive investigation by the joint team led to the recovery of a state firearm that was robbed from the deceased. The pair made their court appearance before the Gqeberha New Law court on 8 January 2025. One accused abandoned bail, while the other suspect is proceeding with his formal bail application. The matter was remanded to 15 January 2025 for further investigation and bail information. Both are remanded in custody.
