Media Statement FREE STATE – United front between the South African Police Service, South African National Defense Force and Private Security Companies against illegal mining in Free State is in full swing. Different operational concepts; foot, vehicle and air-to-ground [using drone] patrols as well as stop-and-search actions were carried out in Beatrix Mine Shaft 4 area and R730 Road. The team also inspected unused shafts and ventilation when they noticed contraband goods stuck approximately 20 meters down the ventilation shaft. The manager of the Company working on-site confirmed that he heard knocking sounds and noise from inside the shaft. Brave Vala uMgodi operators tactically descended down the shaft and recovered an assortment of contraband goods carefully wrapped, labelled with names and a note written in Shona intended for underground illegal miners. Food supplies including tinned food items, biltong, instant porridge, coffee creamer, peanuts, lollipops, cell batteries and others were found wrapped in 64 parcels. Food supply to underground illegal miners was successfully cut. The success of the operation yielded successful results also in Kopanong Mine. The Illicit Mining team arrested six suspects aged between 26 and 62, who surfaced due to lack of food underground. In two separate incidents; 44,8 grams and 741 grams of Gold bearing amalgam nuggets were seized. A case of Illegal mining with additional charges of attempted theft of State minerals and precious metals, Contravention of Mine Health and Safety, Contravention of Immigration Act and Trespassing on mine area was opened at Vierfontein Police Station. Suspects will appear before Court soon.
