Media Statement JOE GQABI DISTRICT – The participation of SAPS members in the Joe Gqabi District in the bilateral high-density operation, yielded significant successes over the five-day period from the 24 – 29 June 2024. The operations were held in the Sterkspruit, Palmietfontein and Phumalanga policing precincts. Police from the various specialized units and other stakeholders within the district formed part of the operations in targeting hotspot areas. The focus areas included checking for stolen vehicles, vehicles transporting livestock, possession of drugs and unlicensed firearms, vehicle roadworthy, and drunken driving. Roadblocks and vehicle check-points were held along the R 392 Umlamli, Sterkspruit, Zastron and Silindini roads during which more than 800 vehicles as well as those transporting livestock and persons were searched and traffic fines to the value of R 54 600-00 were issued. The tracing teams arrested 13 wanted suspects for crimes ranging from assault, crimen injuria, robbery, business burglary, possession of drugs and stolen property, possession of live ammunition and the contravention of the Immigration Act. During the operation police confiscated 46 plastic bags of tik while six cattle was recovered at Thaba Lesoba and four sheep at Blue Gums and handed over to the lawful owners. Crime fighting efforts in these areas police also led to the confiscation of several dangerous weapons and a toy gun. The Joe Gqabi District Commissioner Major General Lindelwa Vellem extended her gratitude to all those units, members, and external role players for their outstanding dedication and commitment during the operation. ‘The professionalism, teamwork, and tireless efforts were instrumental in ensuring the success of the operations,’ added Major General Vellem.
