STERKSPRUIT – The message was loud and clear against the cliffs of the Lopota Village mountains. Gender based violence has no place in our communities, let us unite and say no to violence against our women and children. The message was shared by the Joe Gqabi District Commissioner Major General Lindelwa Vellem supported by the Joe Gqabi Woman’s Network and Sterkspruit station management. The SAPS came to meet with the community and the family after a murder in the area during the weekend. It is alleged that on 13 July 2024 at 20:30, the 40-year-old victim (deceased) had a quarrel with her neighbour that ended up in him stabbing her on her upper body. She was rushed to Empilisweni hospital but had already passed away on her arrival. The awareness was opened with a strong message from Habakuk 3:19 and prayers from Rev Mgcoyi and Rev Kota from Sterkspruit. After the District Commissioner was welcomed by the headman Mr Dyubele and the purpose of the visit was explained, and the members attached to Sterkspruit SAPS were then given an opportunity to address the community members. The sector Commander Cst Mqungquto, Social Crime Official Sgt Galawe, Mr Kota from spiritual crime prevention, and Col Spambo the station Commander shared their crime concerns and prevention messages. The community also had an opportunity to share their concerns. The Joe Gqabi District Commissioner Major General Lindelwa Vellem explained to everyone present that after this awareness, we need to strengthen our actions. We must work together to bring an end to gender based violence and femicide. The men in our community must be the protectors of our women and children. In conclusion, the SAPS visited the family home of the deceased with a message of encouragement. The awareness and visit to the family home were highly appreciated by the community and family at Lopota Village. Ends
