Joburg cop denied emergency help as R35 million debt blocks access

A Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer, identified as Mashigo Lerutwane, is fighting for his life in ICU after being shot while on duty and reportedly denied emergency treatment at Netcare Milpark Hospital. The hospital refused to treat him due to the City of Johannesburg’s outstanding debt of R35 million.

Lerutwane was subsequently transferred to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, where delays in care reportedly worsened his condition. Despite an agreement obligating Netcare Milpark to treat injured officers in emergencies, the hospital cited the city’s failure to settle its bills.

The incident has sparked outrage among city officials. Sarah Wissler, chairperson of the public safety committee, slammed the city’s financial mismanagement and demanded immediate payment of outstanding invoices and an investigation into the broader impact on emergency services.

“The city has failed in its basic duty to protect those who protect us,” said Wissler. DA councillor Michael Sun also laid blame on the coalition government, accusing it of neglecting critical obligations and failing to collect sufficient revenue to cover essential services.

City officials confirmed they are in talks with the hospital to resolve the matter and have launched an internal investigation. A spokesperson reiterated the city’s commitment to ensuring Lerutwane receives the care he needs.
