Media Statement GAUTENG – Warrant Officer Modupi Rakwena, a Detective attached to Springs Family violence, Child protection service and sexual offenses Unit’s meticulous investigation resulted in a rapist being removed from the society. This comes after a 27-year-old Sphiwe Isaac Makula (Sdumo – Nickname), was found guilty recently and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for the rape case, which occurred in 2022. In 03 April 2022 at about 03:00 in the morning, a 19-year-old female complainant was walking along Lekope Street in Duduza from a friend’s party. She was on her way home, and suddenly, a person grabbed her from her back. The person pulled her, and when she looked, it was an unknown male and pulled without a word. She started screaming for help but to no avail. The suspect managed to get the victim to an open field where he pushed her to land, overpowered her, hit her against the ground, and raped her. Thereafter, the suspect demanded the victim ‘s cell phone, but the victim told him that it fell by the time she was trying to free herself from him. The suspect left her there to look for the cell phone. Then, the victim managed to run to the nearby house. She knocked on the door, but no one opened for her. She went back in the street and was assisted by a motorist who gave her a lift home. She reported her case to the Duduza police, and the docket landed on Warrant Officer Rakwena’s desk. The accused was later linked by DNA, and Warrant officer Rakwena arrested him on the 24th of November 2024 at 00:05 am. He stood trial before the Nigel regional court and was convicted for rape as charged and sentenced to 25 years imprisonment.
Ekurhuleni Deputy District Commissioner, Brigadier Lebohang Machakela congratulated Warrant Officer Rakwena for securing hefty sentence to the rapist in the District and ensuring that Justice is served to the victims.
