Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Quarterly Inter-Provincial Cross Border High Density Operations executed in four provinces namely, Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and the Free State, commenced simultaneously from the 26-28 November 2024. The four provinces were represented by their respective provincial representatives at the Joint Provincial Operational Command Centre in Springbok, Northern Cape. Brigadier Hennie Van Rensburg from Northern Cape Provincial Operational Coordination was the Operational Commander for the final time as he will be hanging up his boots and going on retirement. He was supported by Brigadier Penny Pillay from the Eastern Cape and Colonel Nyuliwe from the Free State and Lt Colonel Winston Kiewits from the Western Cape who actively monitored progress during the execution of police actions from the established Joint Operations Centre in Springbok. Actions focused on the movement and transportation of drugs across provincial borders; the trafficking of prohibited and protected fauna and flora, the transportation of illicit metals and other contrabands through national, regional and secondary roads. The police actions executed during the operation included tracing operations by detectives who secured various arrests of wanted suspects across provincial borders. A total of 547 Suspects across the provinces were arrested for an array of crimes including murder, attempted murder, rape, assault, robbery, property related crimes, malicious damage to property, possession of suspected stolen property, theft, drug related crimes, and contravention of the domestic violence statutes. A total of 95 Undocumented immigrants were nabbed for contravening the Immigration Act and were processed by officials from the Department of Home Affairs. The police in the four provinces seized several items including counterfeit goods, dangerous weapons, drugs, firearms and ammunition, infrastructure, liquor, precious metals, vehicles, livestock and cash that is believed to be the proceeds of crime. The police in the Eastern Cape, Kariega and Mount Road Police stations seized contraband and counterfeit goods valued at approximately R5 million at a warehouse in North End Gqeberha and Mark Street Kariega, and an enquiry docket was registered for further investigation. In the Northern Cape Prieska police precinct, crime prevention members deployed in the CBD area noticed three known males carrying suspicious boxes and back packs. On closer inspection and search the police found 30 Telkom batteries with an estimated value of around R15 000 rand and arrested the suspects. In the Western Cape, Lamberts and Elandsbay policing precincts, police during a VCP confiscated tik and mandrax tablets as well as Khat bundles found hidden in a bus in the Rawsonville police precinct and arrested the suspects. 66 roadblocks and 155 vehicle checkpoints (VCP’s) were conducted on national and secondary roads during which 13 561 vehicles were stopped and searched, 22 192 persons and 2454 hand luggage searched. 946 compliance inspections were conducted at business premises related to safer food compliance. The South African Police Service (SAPS) is committed and will continue to stamp down the authority of the state and the police will reclaim their authority from criminals. Some of the successes in the provinces included: A substantial amount of concoction and home brewed alcohol was seized during compliance inspections at shebeens and a several fines were issued. Representing the Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection and also Acting DPC for Police, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga commended all law enforcement agencies and stakeholders who participated in the successful execution of the operations that were conducted simultaneously during this period in all four provinces and indicated that the SAPS will continue to fiercely combat illegal and unregulated activities in and around our borders.
