KIMBERLEY- The quarterly Inter-Provincial Cross Border Operations executed across four provinces namely, Northern Cape, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Free State from the 17 September 2024 until 19 September 2024 yielded exceptional results. The three Northern Cape districts bordering these provinces namely, Frances Baard, Namakwa and Pixley ka Seme districts actively participated in these operations reporting to the Joint Operations Centre (JOC) in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. The JOC was visited by the Northern Cape Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, who rendered support to the Northern Cape team deployed in the area. The Northern Cape actions focused on the movement and transportation of drugs across provincial borders; the trafficking of prohibited and protected fauna and flora; the transportation of illicit metals and other contrabands through national, regional and secondary roads. These disruptive actions included tracing operations by detectives who secured various arrests of wanted suspects across provincial borders, including two (2) suspects wanted in Nuwerus, Western Cape, who were traced in Springbok in the Northern Cape. 120 Suspects across the three districts were arrested for an array of crimes including assault, property related crimes, malicious damage to property, possession of suspected stolen property, theft, drug related crimes and contravention of the domestic violence statutes. 6 Undocumented immigrants were nabbed for contravening the Immigration Act and were processed by officials from the Department of Home Affairs. Drugs including mandrax, dagga, khat and tik and cash that is believed to be the proceeds of crime was seized, including a motorcycle believed to be involved in the commission of crime as well as blank pistols, pellets and ammunition. 250 000 sticks of illicit cigarettes valued at more than R352 000 were seized at a private residence in Delportshoop and an enquiry docket was registered for further investigation. 17 roadblocks and 19 vehicle checkpoints (VCP’s) were conducted on national and secondary roads during which 3639 vehicles and 5348 persons were stopped and searched, and 1079 hand luggage was checked and scanned. Traffic fines to the amount of R71 650-00 were issued for various traffic violations. The excecution of search warrants at Sizamile in Port Nolloth and Marydale resulted in the removal of illicit drugs from our streets. A significant amount of alcoholic concoction was seized during compliance inspections at liquor outlets and several fines were issued for numerous contraventions. The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, who visited roadblocks and vehicle check points, commended all law enforcement agencies and stakeholders who participated in the successful execution of the operations that were conducted simultaneously during this period in all four provinces and indicated that the SAPS will continue fiercely to combat illegal and unregulated activities in and around our borders.
