The sentence comes after the court heard that on Tuesday, 07 May 2024, the police conducted an operation at Atok at about 23:15, when they noticed two males busy mining illegally at Machakaneng Section. Police tactically approached the suspects and found them using a jackhammer and generator. The suspects were searched, and they were found without passports. They were immediately arrested for illegal mining and contravention of Immigration Act. The accused were sentenced as follows: * Mahleka Mashura (49) was sentenced to four months imprisonment or R2000 fine. Two months imprisonment or R1000 fine for illegal immigrants. The sentences will run concurrently. * Ivan Mhuru (31) sentenced to four months imprisonment or R2000 fine for illegal mining. Two months imprisonment or R1000 fine for illegal immigrants. The sentences will run concurrently. The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has welcomed the sentence handed against the two accused. She further applauded the investigating officer and the arresting team members of Vala Umgodi Operations in the province. Ends
