Media Statement FREE STATE – The sister operation to Vala Umgodi, Operation Knock-out, runs parallel with the actions of Vala Umgodi in the fight against illicit mining. Both in the Lejweleputswa and surrounding areas. Since the project started, operatives from the Tactical Response Team and Public Order Policing members have been complimented by the private security personnel. Face-off in gun battles with illegal miners with the sole mandate of taking over and dismantling the illicit mining syndicates. On 15 August 2024 at about 10:00, the knockout team, together with private security, conducted disruptive action on information about a suspected smelt house in Virginia. They proceeded to the house and the house was tactically penetrated. Nine (9) African males aged between 25 and 49 who were busy processing gold were arrested for acquisition, possession, and disposal of unwrought precious metal (gold nugget) under Act 37 of 2004 section 4(1), and (2) two counts of Contravention of Immigration Act 13 of 2002 read with Section 49(1)(a). Equipment seized included two heating pans, one self-made phenduka, two self-made phenduka stands, a pickaxe, oxygen cylinders and acetylene cylinders. Gold worth an estimated R15 000 was also seized. The same day, at about 15:30, the knockout team members together with private security reacted to information from the intelligence team in relation to a wanted suspect in a robbery with a firearm case from Odendaalsrus. The team proceeded to Bronville’s Tjovitjo informal settlement, where the 29-year-old male was found and arrested. After going through the property, members found an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as a bulletproof vest.
The Knockout team members, together with private security, conducted illicit mining disruptive action and reacted on information about illicit trade taking place at an old shaft in the Welkom vicinity. The old shaft was tactically approached and the entrance was found barricaded with rocks. The team swiftly managed to gain entry and arrested seven (07) African males aged between 64 and 25 years old for possession of possible GBM, trespass and one count of contravention of the Immigration Act.
