‘I fear for South Africa’s future!’ Emotional Williams hails Bafana’s history-making heroes

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has delivered an emotional verdict after South Africa created history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time ever.
The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper was almost lost for words after Hugo Broos’ men defeated South Korea 1-0 on Thursday morning to book a Round of 32 clash against Canada.
Williams admitted the criticism and pressure the team endured made the achievement even sweeter, saying the squad had proved every doubter wrong.
“Amazing. I am lost for words. I honestly don’t know what to say. I don’t know if there is a better word than proud,” said Williams.
“I am super proud. I am ecstatic because of what this team has been through. The doubts, the doubters and the stress that we have gone through.”
The 34-year-old hailed Bafana’s defensive display, saying keeping a clean sheet against a quality South Korean side showed the character that has been built within the squad.
“Playing at this level is not easy. To keep a clean sheet against such quality opposition, to perform the way we did and defend the way we did speaks volumes about the character of this team,” said Williams.
Williams then made a bold statement about the future of South African football, insisting the country’s next generation is destined for greatness.
“We were under siege but we stayed strong. The mentality and character in this team is something else. I am scared for the future of this country.
“These boys are 19, 20 and 21 years old and they are already playing at this level. The experience they are gaining will only help us as a country. I am just happy and proud to be the leader of this team.”
With history already made, Williams believes Bafana Bafana’s World Cup dream is far from over as they now turn their attention to Sunday’s knockout clash against Canada.
