American Xander Schauffele won his second major of his career when he triumphed at the Open Championship at Royal Troon on Sunday.
Schauffele also won the PGA Championship in May this year.
At Royal Troon he finished the 72 holes on 9-under-par, two strokes ahead of England’s Justin Rose.
Schauffele, 30, took home $3.1 million for his win and moved to No 2 in the latest golf world rankings.
From a South African point of view, eight golfers started the tournament with three making the halfway cut.
As reported by The South African website, Ernie Els pulled out ahead of the second round with a back injury.
Joining Els in failing to make the weekend and going home empty-handed were Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Louis Oosthuizen, Ryan van Velzen and amateur Altin van der Merwe.
The trio who did make the halfway cut were Thriston Lawrence, Dean Burmester and Darren Fichardt.
Lawrence finished a commendable fourth overall on 6-under par and banked $876 000 (R16 million).
He also moved from 98th to 71st in the world rankings.
Burmester finished in a tie for 19th place on 3-over par and took home $176 367 (R3.2 million), while Fichardt finished 80th – and last among those to have made the halfway cut – on 22-over par which was good enough for a $38 150 (R700 000) pay day.
