Twenty-one young initiates in Limpopo who were hospitalized after undergoing reportedly unsafe circumcisions have been discharged from George Masebe Hospital due to limited space at the facility.
The boys, who came from initiation schools in Lesodi and Rantlakana, were affected by what is suspected to be botched procedures. Of the group, five received re-circumcision procedures at the hospital and were discharged the same day. However, the remaining sixteen were sent back to their schools, with plans for them to be taken to Mokopane Hospital for treatment.
Officials say the move was necessary due to the hospital’s inability to accommodate all the patients at once. A government delegation is expected to visit the initiation schools soon to better understand the situation and ensure the initiates receive proper care moving forward.
