Hopetown man sentenced for attempted rape and assailt GBH

NORTHERN CAPE – The SAPS welcomes the sentence that was handed down to Simon Mans (32) for attempted rape and assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

On 16 July 2023 at about 01:35, the 19-year-old female victim was speaking on her cellphone outside a tavern in Goutrou, Hopetown, when she was accosted by the accused.

He assaulted and strangled her and forcefully dragged her to a toilet where he attempted to rape her. The victim fought him off, managed to run away, and alerted the police.

The suspect was arrested hours later and remained in custody until sentencing in the Kimberley Regional Court as follows:

Count 1: Attempted Rape 10 years imprisonment
Count 2: Assault GBH 2 years imprisonment. 

Detective Sergeant Frans Louw of the Hopetown Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit led the outstanding detective work that ensured that the GBVF perpetrator is safely behind bars.
