Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has expressed concern over the performance of referees at the start of the Betway Premiership season.

Hlungwani says there have already been certain questionable mistakes in the opening matches of the season. However, he believes these errors could be a blessing in disguise if they help address the issues early on.

It hasn’t started well, but perhaps it’s better that we see these mistakes early so they can be rectified,” Hlungwani said. He also highlighted two incidents in the match between TS Galaxy and Mamelodi Sundowns. Hlungwani noted that two goals in that match appeared to potentially involve players in offside positions when the ball was played.

There were two goals in the TS Galaxy versus Sundowns match that looked like they might have been offside,” he said. This has once again reignited discussions about the need to implement the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in South African football.

Hlungwani remains hopeful that VAR training can commence before the end of the season. “We hope that before the season ends, VAR training can begin,” he stated. The introduction of VAR could assist match officials in making crucial calls, particularly regarding goals, penalties, and red card incidents.
