Media Statement POLOKWANE – The high-density Operation Vala Umgodi through multi-disciplinary forces arrested alleged illegal sand miners and confiscated the mining equipment at illegal mining sites. The high-density Operation Vala Umgodi through multi-disciplinary forces involved in the disruptive operation comprised the SAPS Tactical Response Team, Public Order Policing and Organised Crime Investigation Unit. According to the information the Operational Teams have on Friday 03 May 2024 at about 16:20, through an intelligence driven operation arrested four male suspects aged between 28 and 52 years at Seshego Industrial sites where they were caught in the act of digging and loading the sand into the tipper trucks with an excavator. The Police further managed to confiscate the three tipper trucks and excavator from illegal sand mining site which were found being used in the contravention of Environmental Act and illegal mining. In addition, the two phendukas were confiscated on Friday 03 May 2024 in Vhembe District at Muchipis illegal mining sites. The suspected illegal miners fled the scene after they noticed the Police in their vicinity and subsequently evaded the arrest. The suspects are expected to appear before Seshego Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 06 May 2024 facing charges of illegal mining. Ends
