Media Statement BLOEMFONTEIN – High-density Operation Vala Umgodi Operation conducted with the objective to curb illegal mining activities yielded good successes in the Lejweleputswa and Fezile Dabi districts. The following forces were involved in the operation from 17 until 18 May 2024: the Local Criminal Record Centre, SANDF, Tactical Response Team, SAPS Airwing, the Department of Home Affairs, Crime Intelligence and Public Order Policing. During this period, four vehicle checkpoints and 46 stop-and-searches were held at different hotspots where 245 people and 192 vehicles were searched. Members conducted foot patrols, searched two premises, visited 14 shafts, 19 mines, three malls, two spaza shops, ten ATMs, and six power stations. On 17 May 2024 from 14:00 to 22:00, three foreign nationals were arrested at Naledi Section of Bothaville. A case of stock theft was registered at Bothaville during May 2024 and an intelligence-driven operation was conducted. Information was operationalised on 17 May 2024 from 14:00 to 22:00 which led to the house in Kanana, Orkney where nine suspects were arrested with suspected stolen livestock that had already been slaughtered. An Isuzu bakkie with North West registration numbers used in the commission of the crime was seized. Seven South Africans and two foreign nationals were detained. On Friday, 17 May 2024 from 18:00 a joint operation was held at a bus station depot in Ventersburg with the following role players: the Department of Home Affairs and the SANDF. A total of 16 suspects were arrested for contravention of the Immigration Act. On Friday 17 May 2024 at about 12:00 seven suspects were arrested for the same offenses in Welkom. The arrested suspects will appear on 20 May 2024 in Welkom, Bothaville, Vierfontein, Orkney and Ventersburg Magistrate Courts, respectively. Ends
