Media Statement POLOKWANE – The High Density Operation Vala Umgodi continues to gain momentum in preventing and combating illegal mining activities. The Multidisciplinary Forces comprising the SAPS Airwing, Sekhukhune Illegal Mining Task Team, Public Order Police, National Intervention Unit and the Tactical Response Team have on Monday, 03 June 2024, through Operation Vala Umgodi, arrested six suspects aged between 18 and 63 for illegal mining and contravention of immigration act at Mahlakwena illicit mining sites outside Burgersfort in Sekhukhune District. In addition, one male suspect (42) was arreested by while digging sand without permit by Capricorn Illicit mining Task Team on Tuesday 04 June 2024 at Apollo-Makurung illegal mining sites outside Lebowakgomo. The Police in their tour of Operation also confiscated mining equipment that included power generators, shovels, wheelbarrows, jackhammers, electrical cables, drills, bush knives as well as a motor vehicle white Nissan NP 200 and a white Hino tipper truck. In a separate incident, the Border Police Team on Monday, 03 June 2024, arrested nine foreign nationals for contravention of immigration act alongside the Beitbridge Port of Entry.
The suspects are expected to appear before various Magistrate’s Courts in the week facing charges of illegal mining and contravention of immigration act.
