Media Statement POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has hailed the industrious and collaborative efforts by multi-disciplinary teams for the apprehension of suspects and subsequent confiscation of trucks during the disruptive operation Vala Umgodi in Sekhukhune District. The high-density disruptive Operation Vala Umgodi conducted by the multi-disciplinary forces on Wednesday, 10 April 2024, arrested 18 male suspects aged between 30 and 50 and subsequently confiscated 18 side tipper trucks fully loaded with chrome along R555 road at Steelpoort in Sekhukhune District. Multi-disciplinary forces comprising of the SAPS National Intervention Unit, Public Order Police, Tactical Response Team, Sekhukhune Task Team and members of the South African National Defence Force through intelligence driven operation confiscated 18 side tipper trucks fully loaded with chrome and arrested the 18 drivers for unlawful possession of suspected stolen precious minerals, chrome. It is reported that preliminary investigations revealed that none of the truck drivers had proper documentation for the transporting of minerals. The Police have since launched a massive manhunt for the possible syndicate that is engaged in illegal mining activities. Police are urging members of the community to come forward with any information that can lead to the arrest of the illegal miners and to report information to the SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or alternatively report to the nearest Police Station or forward anonymous tip-off via the MySAPS App. The suspects are expected to appear before Burgersfort Magistrate’s Courts soon in the week.
