In a powerful display of unity, compassion, and national pride, the South African Police Service (SAPS), together with the Women’s Network and Men for Change, celebrated the bravery of Constable Macdonald Motete by handing over a brand-new, fully furnished home to him and his family in Bethlehem in the Eastern Free State on Wednesday 21 May 2025.
This momentous gesture comes in recognition of Constable Motete’s extraordinary act of heroism on the night of 11 August 2024, when he fearlessly saved his wife and four children from a raging inferno that consumed their home. Despite his success in rescuing his loved ones, the fire left the family without a roof over their heads.
Moved by his courage and sacrifice, various stakeholders rallied together to restore what the flames had taken, demonstrating the true South African spirit of ubuntu, unity, and resilience. The initiative was led by the Women’s Network and Men for Change in Bethlehem, with the unwavering support of the SAPS and provincial authorities.
Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane and MEC for Community Safety Roads and Transport Jabu Mbalula were present to hand over the keys to the Motete family, symbolizing not just a home rebuilt, but a nation standing tall behind its heroes.
In her address, Premier Letsoha-Mathae paid heartfelt tribute to Constable Motete’s bravery:
“We are gathered here to honour a selfless and courageous public servant. On that fateful Sunday evening, Constable Motete risked everything to save his family from the jaws of tragedy. His actions were not just heroic—they were a testament to the kind of servant leadership and patriotism that strengthens our country. The young lives he saved will one day grow to serve this nation, continuing the legacy of courage and dedication.”
This initiative serves as a powerful reminder that South Africa is a country built on the values of compassion, courage, and community. When our people rise above adversity to protect and uplift one another, we affirm the enduring spirit of a united nation.
Constable Motete’s story is not just that of one man. It is a reflection of the bravery found in our police service, the solidarity within our communities, and the promise of a better, safer South Africa for all.
