Health Ombud launches probe into death of medical intern at KZN Hospital
The Health Ombud, Professor Taole Mokoena, has launched a formal investigation into the tragic death of Dr Alulutho Mazwi, a 25-year-old medical intern who collapsed and died while on duty at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital on May 12.
Initiated at the request of Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, the investigation seeks to uncover the circumstances surrounding Mazwi’s death, amid allegations that he was compelled to work despite reporting ill health.
Dr Mazwi, who had recently been diagnosed with diabetes, allegedly informed his supervisor of his deteriorating condition but was still instructed to continue working.
The probe will assess the working conditions and support systems in place for interns and other healthcare professionals at the hospital. It also aims to identify potential systemic failures and provide recommendations to prevent similar tragedies.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the country. Medical unions, political parties, and professional associations including Samatu and the Public Servants Association have condemned what they describe as “inhumane treatment” of junior doctors in public health institutions.
A supervisor at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital has since been placed on precautionary suspension pending the outcome of the investigation.
The Ombud’s office, which holds the authority to subpoena individuals and records, has pledged to conduct an independent and transparent investigation. This case follows a similar referral involving the recent death of another doctor at Vryheid Hospital, further amplifying national concerns over the welfare of healthcare workers and systemic shortcomings within South Africa’s public health sector.
