EASTERN CAPE – The Priority Crime Specialised Investigations (PCSI) of Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) together with Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has recorded a substantial success in the fight against organised crime, with the latest granting of preservation order by Makhanda High court on 19 March 2025. The attainment highlights the assurance of the team efforts to recover assets consequent from criminal activities. On 4 September 2023, it is alleged that Komani South African Police Service (SAPS) received information about a silver grey Toyota Fortuner that was travelling at the N6 from East London towards Komani. The police immediately conducted a roadblock with the aim to intercept the said vehicle. Consequently, the Fortuner apparently approached the police and drove pass the road despite the police stopping it. Chase ensued, then few hours later the police recovered the vehicle near Sterkstroom abandoned not locked. The vehicle was reportedly searched, where a total of 483 units of abalone as well live rounds of ammunition were found and seized. Thereafter, the case was handed over to the PCSI for asset forfeiture investigations. The team efforts resulted in the granting of asset forfeiture order worth over R870 00 by Makhanda High court on 19 March 2025. The vehicle will be sold at auction, and proceeds will be deposited into Criminal Asset Recovery Account (CARA) for state use. No suspect was arrested in this incident, he is still at large.
