Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – A 41-year-old suspect was arrested by the Mthatha based Serious Organised Crime Investigation working together with Madeira Visible Policing members facing allegations of kidnapping on 3 January 2025. His co-accused Ntsika Tyali (38) the professional assistant nurse at Ngangelizwe clinic at Mthatha was apprehended on 17 July 2024. Tyali have been in custody ever since his arrest. It is alleged that on 6 June 2024, two victims were reportedly accosted by an unidentified armed suspects that reportedly bardged into their homestead at Engcobo allegedly pointed them with firearms. Further allegations revealed that the victims were forced into unknown vehicles to an unknown place and later on the day ransom was demanded by the suspects. During the said incident, the suspects reportedly took the victim’s bank card and pin numbers where they allegedly withdrew cash in tranches and purchased expensive clothing from various retail shops, as a result the victims suffered a loss of over R1.5 million. Due to the pressure exerted upon the suspects by the investigating team, the victims were released a couple of days later. Preliminary investigation established that the accused allegedly divided the cash among themselves. Through intensive investigation, the team spotted one of the suspects that was suspected to have been involved in the said kidnapping incident at Sprigg Street in Mthatha. Subsequently, the police approached the suspect and he was arrested on the spot.
The accused is expected to make his court appearance before Engcobo Magistrates Court on 6 January 2025. The matter is still under investigation and and more arrest is imminent.
