Media Statement ZWELITSHA – The Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, officially opened a new police station in Qhasa on Thursday, 23 May 2024. This significant development is part of government’s commitment to enhancing service delivery, reducing crime, and fostering community policing. SAPS Qhasa is strategically located to bring essential services closer to the people, ensuring that the rural community has improved access to law enforcement and emergency services When addressing the community, General Bheki Cele emphasized the priority of crimes against women and children and that police must ensure arrests and offer comprehensive support for the victims. He added that, ‘the opening of this police station marks a significant step forward in our mission to create a safer and more secure environment for all our citizens. The police station belongs to the people of this area, and they will be served with diligence.’ The National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola welcomed everyone and expressed his gratitude to the community for their attendance and interest shown in the opening of their new police station. The MEC for Community Safety and Transport, Honourable Xolile Nqatha, in his message of support, thanked the Minister of Police for the initiative of building a police station in the area, ‘as in the past, the community were disadvantaged as they had to travel a distance in order to get assistance from the police. The new police station will foster stronger relationships between police and the community and this will help in the fight against crime under the theme, “musa ukuthula kusonakala”. The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene expressed her appreciation to the Minister, the National Commissioner and government for their intervention in building a new police station for the people of Qhasa. She also thanked the MEC for his intervention in the unabated taxi feud which resulted in violence and senseless killings. She added that,’ the SAPS remains steadfast in its efforts to improve law enforcement infrastructures. This new police station in Qhasa depicts our unwavering dedication to public safety and service excellence. I urge the community to work together with police with the common goal of fighting crime and ensuring safety for all.’ Ends
