Ghanaian R&B and Afro-fusion sensation Gyakie has been named Spotify’s EQUAL Africa Ambassador for September 2025, marking her second time in the program. The EQUAL Africa initiative spotlights women in music across the continent, and this month, the spotlight shines on the Kumasi-born artist.
Gyakie rose to fame with her hit single “Forever” and recently released her debut album “After Midnight”. As the daughter of Highlife legend Nana Acheampong, Gyakie’s musical roots run deep. She began her musical journey while studying International Business at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2019. Gyakie has been recognized as one of Africa’s sharpest young leaders, featured in Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 list
In an interview, Gyakie shared insights into her music and experiences as a woman artist:
Gyakie revealed that she co-produced some songs on her album, emphasizing the importance of reflecting her creative vision in her music.
Gyakie knew music was her destiny after recording her first song, “Love is Pretty,” which sparked a strong connection with her audience.
Gyakie grew up listening to her father, Nana Acheampong, and icons like Nina Simone, Sade, and Louis Armstrong, whose mix of highlife, soul, reggae, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop shaped her sound.
As a woman artist, Gyakie has had to stand up for herself in many spaces, dedicating herself to being her true self and shaping her artistry.
Spotify’s EQUAL Africa initiative champions women artists through global partnerships, activations, new content experiences, and both on- and off-platform support. The program aims to foster equity in audio and celebrate women’s contributions to music. Gyakie expressed her excitement, saying, “Being part of the EQUAL programme is an empowering step forward, and I am super honoured”
