Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – Sterling investigative work by the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit culminated in the apprehension of a suspect on Friday, 18 October 2024, for murder and five counts of attempted murder. According to information, two males arrived at a tavern in Kanana Old Location, near Orkney at approximately 22:00 on Friday, 04 October 2024, and fired several shots killing a man while five people; a woman and four males sustained gunshot wounds. The suspects fled from the scene while the injured persons were taken to the clinic for medical attention and later transported to Tshepong hospital. Police were summoned to the scene and a case of murder and five counts of attempted murder were registered. The cases were allocated the Anti-Gang Unit for investigation and that led to the identification of deceased as Mokhele Sephapho (46) from Lesotho. Subsequently, the two gunmen were also identified as Lesotho foreign nationals. The long arm of the law caught up with one of the suspects on Friday, 18 October 2024, in Viljoenskroon, Free State Province. He appeared at the local Magistrates’ Court for contravention of the Immigration Act, 2002. The suspect was positively identified by witnesses and charged with murder and five counts of attempted murder. Thabo Justinus Letsie (36) appeared in the Orkney Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 22 October 2024. He was remanded in custody until Tuesday, 29 October 2024, for legal representation and bail application. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena lauded the investigation team for their tireless efforts that resulted in the arrest. Ends
