Golden Arrows apologise after offensive post targeting Chiefs star sparks outrage
Golden Arrows have moved swiftly to apologise after an offensive social media post published ahead of their MTN8 quarter final clash against Kaizer Chiefs triggered widespread condemnation.
The post, shared by the club’s UPBACKTHROUGH PODCAST platform, was criticised for using a derogatory isiZulu term associated with people living with albinism. Although no player was mentioned by name, many supporters believed the message was aimed at Kaizer Chiefs winger Luke Baartman, who has spoken publicly about living with albinism.
The controversial post, written in isiZulu, stated: “Shezi ngeke ahlulwe ukumaka isishawa,” which translates to a reference suggesting Shezi would be able to mark a person with albinism.
The message was later removed after it sparked anger across social media platforms, with many users accusing the club’s account of promoting harmful language and discrimination.
The term “isishawa” is considered a deeply offensive slur against people with albinism, a community that has historically faced prejudice, discrimination and harmful stereotypes.
Golden Arrows responded by distancing themselves from the post and confirmed that action had been taken against the individual responsible.
In a statement released through the UPBACKTHROUGH PODCAST platform, the club apologised to those affected.
“UPBACKTHROUGH PODCAST would like to apologise for harm caused to citizens, to a specific group of people and Kaizer Chiefs for one of our previous posts.
“It does not reflect who we are and severe action has been taken against the relevant person,” the statement read.
The apology comes at a sensitive time for the Durban based club, with Golden Arrows preparing to face Kaizer Chiefs in a highly anticipated MTN8 quarter final fixture on Sunday.
The match was already expected to attract significant attention, but the controversy has placed further focus on the importance of responsible communication, particularly from professional sporting organisations with large public audiences.
South African football has previously faced criticism over incidents involving discriminatory language, highlighting the ongoing need for clubs, players and supporters to challenge prejudice in all forms.
Golden Arrows’ response will now be closely watched as the club attempts to move forward from the incident while preparing for one of the biggest fixtures of their season.
