Several parties in the Government of National Unity (GNU) will hold their preparatory talks ahead of next Wednesday’s much anticipated Cabinet Lekgotla, the first one of the year.
The African National Congress (ANC) will start its National Executive Committee (NEC) Lekgotla today while the Pan-Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) NEC Lekgotla enters its second day this morning.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) will hold a media briefing later today where party leader John Steenhuisen is expected to outline the next step in response to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s signing of the Expropriation Act.
‘Revival of SA’s economy tops ANC Lekgotla’s agenda’
Speaking to the SABC on the sidelines of their three day NEC gathering, PAC Secretary General Apa Pooe says their input to the Government Lekgotla will, among others, include coming up with alternative policies to the country’s land question.
“We will definitely come with an alternative policy program so that we can go present to government through the Minister, who is also the PAC President. He will be reflecting what the PAC expectation is and what we are putting forward as a policy alternative. One of the major things that we are looking into, is how do we make sure that we fast track the land restoration and we know that there has been a challenge around compensation.
We are going to look into that as to what are other policy positions we can come up with. We are looking into foreign governments who were supporting the apartheid regime, can’t we look into them funding this land restoration program,” adds Pooe.

The ANC is expected to develop its programme of action for the year at its Lekgotla being held in Boksburg East of Johannesburg.
The annual meeting follows a meeting of the National Executive Committee last weekend, which resolved on the party’s plans for renewal, organisational unity, and the pursuit of a transformative agenda for South Africa.
The Lekgotla, which will comprise NEC members, ANC deployees to government and alliance partner leaders, will focus discussions on how to implement the tasks outlined by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the party’s 113th birthday during the ANC’s January 8 celebrations two weeks ago.
