Gauteng Traffic Police Chief Samuel Mashaba Suspended After Damning Madlanga Commission Testimony

Samuel Mashaba suspended

Suspension follows damning testimony linking senior officer to alleged misconduct and criminal networks

The Gauteng Provincial Government has suspended Gauteng Traffic Police Chief Inspector Samuel Mashaba with immediate effect following explosive testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that has cast a dark shadow over one of the province’s most senior law enforcement figures.

The decision, announced by the Office of Premier Panyaza Lesufi on Sunday, comes after Mashaba made a series of admissions during proceedings at the commission in June 2026. His testimony has raised serious questions about abuse of power, ethical misconduct and alleged links to criminal activity.

The suspension marks a dramatic development in a scandal that has gripped public attention and intensified scrutiny of law enforcement agencies in Gauteng.

Cocaine seizure at centre of growing controversy

At the heart of the controversy is Mashaba’s alleged involvement in the interception of 715kg of cocaine in July 2021. The drug consignment, valued at approximately R300 million, has become a focal point of the Madlanga Commission’s investigations.

Evidence presented before the commission suggests that Mashaba and several co-accused individuals may not have had the legal authority to conduct the operation. Investigators are examining allegations that the group may have intended to unlawfully seize the consignment rather than carry out a legitimate law enforcement action.

The revelations have triggered widespread concern about the integrity of officials entrusted with combating organised crime.

Admissions raise fresh concerns

During his testimony, Mashaba admitted to accepting money from Tumelo Nku, a civilian who was initially described as a police informant but who has since been linked to drug trafficking through WhatsApp communications presented before the commission.

Further testimony alleged that Mashaba coordinated members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to conduct an unlawful recovery operation involving stolen US dollars at OR Tambo International Airport.

According to evidence before the commission, the operation was carried out on behalf of Nku and involved payment for services rendered, raising serious concerns about conflicts of interest and the misuse of state resources.

Gauteng government acts

In a statement released on Sunday, the Office of the Premier confirmed that Mashaba had been placed on precautionary suspension pending the outcome of a formal disciplinary process.

“The decision follows testimony provided by Chief Inspector Mashaba before the Madlanga Commission, during which he made admissions relating to conduct that may constitute serious breaches of the Public Service Code of Conduct, departmental policies and applicable laws governing public servants,” the statement said.

The government said the admissions included allegations relating to the misuse of official powers entrusted to him as a law enforcement officer, the misuse of departmental tools and state resources, and the acceptance of compensation from a member of the public under circumstances that raise concerns about ethical conduct and conflicts of interest.

Immediate restrictions imposed

As part of the suspension, Mashaba has been ordered to surrender all official equipment and resources, including government-issued phones, firearms and laptops.

He has also been barred from entering government buildings or interacting with departmental staff while investigations continue.

The provincial government said the restrictions are necessary to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations and disciplinary processes.

Government vows accountability

The Gauteng Provincial Government stressed that it takes the allegations seriously and remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and accountability within public institutions.

“The Gauteng Provincial Government remains committed to building an ethical, capable and professional public service that serves residents with honesty and integrity. Any conduct that undermines public trust in government institutions will be dealt with decisively and in accordance with the law,” the statement said.

The suspension of Mashaba is likely to intensify public scrutiny of the findings emerging from the Madlanga Commission as investigators continue to examine allegations of corruption, abuse of power and criminal infiltration within law enforcement structures.

For now, one of Gauteng’s most controversial law enforcement figures finds himself sidelined as authorities move to determine whether the allegations against him amount to serious misconduct and possible criminal wrongdoing.
