Thami Moyo, chairperson of the Gauteng National Taxi Association, was shot and killed on Thursday in Diepkloof, Johannesburg.
According to police, Moyo was ambushed while driving alone on the Soweto Highway. Gunmen in a minibus taxi and a Toyota Yaris opened fire, killing him instantly. Nothing was stolen from his car, leading investigators to suspect the attack was a targeted hit.

The National Taxi Alliance confirmed his death but said details are still emerging. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Mavela Masondo added that while the incident cannot yet be officially linked to taxi violence, suspicions remain strong given Moyo’s role in the industry.
“If it is confirmed to be taxi-related, the dedicated task team will take over the case,” Masondo said, noting that authorities are working with the Department of Transport and metro police.
The Soweto Highway between the N1 and Immink Drive was closed in both directions as emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene. Motorists were urged to use alternative routes.
Moyo’s killing comes just weeks after another violent attack connected to the transport sector. On 13 August, e-hailing driver Mthokozisi Siyanda Mvelase was shot and set alight near Maponya Mall, an incident also believed to be linked to tensions between taxi operators and e-hailing drivers.
Police have appealed to the public for information that could assist their investigation. Tip-offs can be reported anonymously to Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
